Where is Bussorah Street?
Bussorah Street, originally known as Sultan Road, is located right in front of Masjid Sultan.
Bussorah Street is widely recognized as Kampong Kaji (Pilgrim Village). Up till the mid-1970s, it used to be where most of the pilgrims and their accompanying families stayed while waiting for the pilgrim ships to arrive.
Here, a whole array of services were made available to cater to the needs of the pilgrims.
They include:
- Sheikh Hajis (pious men known in the community for their knowledge of the haj) to prepare the pilgrims spiritually
- Pilgrim Brokers to take care of the logistics
- Cheap lodging houses
- Money-changers
- Shops selling necessary supplies (e.g. food, blankets, shawls, tali pinggang)
